Florida fell to 5-6 in a 24-23 overtime loss to Missouri. Those words in themselves are a pretty damning indictment of where the program has fallen.
You shouldn’t lose to Kentucky at Florida. You shouldn’t lose to South Carolina at Florida. You shouldn’t lose to Missouri at Florida. And you sure shouldn’t lose to all three in the same season, not if you want to remain the head coach at Florida.
Dan Mullen’s selling point was always that he was going to ensure that the floor of the Florida program was secure. Yes, the Gators might struggle against Georgia and Alabama, but they were going to win the games they should. The ceiling was always the question, but the 2020 offense gave hope that with a change at defensive coordinator, Florida would be able to break through with the Clemson’s and LSU’s of the world.
But 2021 has shown us all – for those who weren’t convinced previously – that not only is the desired ceiling unattainable, but the perceived floor was a mirage as well.
Coming off of the Samford win, I wasn’t really sure what we were going to get. Had this one been a 40-point Missouri victory, I wouldn’t have been surprised. If the Gators had come out and buried the Tigers, I would have been surprised but not shocked. The fact that we ended up with inconsistencies on both sides for two 5-5 teams, and that the game went into overtime, seems like a fitting conclusion to the Gators SEC season.
So I’m left with a weird feeling, where I’m impressed that the Gators played as hard as they did on the road with an embattled head coach hanging on by a thread. But I’m also left with an empty feeling as all of the problems that have shown up all year showed up yet again.
This loss felt like the Kentucky loss all over again. Pretty good defensive play, poor special teams, perplexing play calling and clock management, and a team with superior athletes losing to a team that just made a few less mistakes.
I don’t feel bad after this game, just resigned. Because you can say that the players played hard for Mullen, and that is true. You can say that you’re proud of that fight from those players, and that is true. You can even say you see the talent on this team and expect that 2022 will be much better, and that is probably true.
But one thing you can’t say is that this was the Gator Standard.
Offense
If there’s one play that exemplifies this entire season, this is the one.
The staple of Dan Mullen’s offense is the read-option. The entire point is that the QB reads the defensive end and then if he doesn’t crash, he hands the ball to the running back. If he does crash down, then the QB keeps the ball and runs around the end.
One modification to the read-option is that you pull your tight end across the formation, which is what Florida does here with Kemore Gamble (#9). Once the play calls for this, the read changes because the pulling tight end can block the defensive end. Normally, you’d be reading the linebacker behind the defensive end, but Missouri doesn’t have anybody there.
This should have been a huge play for Florida. There’s just nobody there on the outside if he pulls the ball out and runs it himself. Handing the ball off to Dameon Pierce is doomed because of the alignment of the defense, which has nine defenders either in-line with, or to the right of, center Kingsley Eguakun (one deep safety isn’t on the screen).
Dan Mullen mentioned Jones missing reads coming out of the half and these are the things he was likely talking about. Jones then tried to pull the ball from the running back two plays later and put the ball on the ground. Florida had to settle for a field goal.
And settling was the operative word for the offense against Missouri.
The opening drive ended in a field goal after those two plays. The third drive ended in a punt from the Missouri 42 after having a first-and-10 at the Mizzou 38 and then having a false start force a punt rather than a fourth down try. The fourth drive ended in a field goal after a first-and-goal at the two-yard line turned into fourth-and-goal from the nine. The fifth drive ended on a fourth-and-1 after Xzavier Henderson was stopped just short of a first down with six minutes left in the half.
There will (and should) be plenty of criticism for Dan Mullen and his conservative play calling when the Gators took over with just over a minute left and essentially packed it in for overtime. But this game was lost in the first half when Florida could have been up by 14 points and instead were behind by three.
Defense
I’m so impressed by this defensive performance.
They’ve been maligned the past three weeks, and rightfully so. Their play against South Carolina was dreadful and was even worse against Samford. But they came to play against Missouri, and should be applauded for it.
Yes, they gave up a couple of big plays and weren’t able to hold down Tyler Badie late or in overtime, but they gave Florida a chance to win and that’s really all you can ask for from a unit that has struggled as much as this one has.
The night started with the defense finally doing something I’ve been critical of them for all year long: getting a stop after the offense takes over with a short field. This time it was after a terrible punt by Jeremy Crawshaw gave the Tigers the ball at the Florida 18-yard line.
The Tigers lost four yards and were forced to kick a game-tying field goal.
The second Tigers’ score came on a 34-yard drive that only had one big play (a 26-yard pass to Niko Hea), and the defense again bowed up to get a stop and force a 46-yard field goal.
And late in the game, with Missouri driving and Florida down to one timeout, the Gators again were able to get a stop. Trey Dean had just been called for a pass interference giving Missouri a first down at the Gators 30-yard line. The defense again was able to stop Badie on three straight runs, setting up the missed field goal.
Ty’Ron Hopper was all over the field, collecting 12 tackles and 2 tackles for loss. I thought Mohamoud Diabate was excellent as well (aside from his offsides on a fourth-and-1), despite only having two tackles. After seeing linebackers struggle for the past two years, it was really fun seeing those two show what they can do.
It started early for Diabate, as after the bad punt by Crawshaw, he made the most critical play of Missouri’s ensuing drive.
Missouri is trying to manipulate the linebackers with motion. They’re expecting Diabate to take a false step or two towards the fake out into the flat. Instead, he stays focused on Tyler Badie and accelerates to make the play.
And perhaps the thing I’ve been hoping for from the linebackers the most showed up on the most critical drive.
On this play, Missouri runs the counter. This is something Florida has struggled to stop for some time now. One of the reasons is because their linebackers have been timid.
But not so on this play. Diabate fires towards the line of scrimmage and knocks his blocker backwards. The defensive line does its job too, getting penetration to make the running back hesitate. But then watch as Hopper explodes into the hole and absolutely crushes Badie right as he gets into the hole.
Hopper is young. He’s going to make some mistakes. But he came to play tonight, much like the rest of the defense. I would have loved to have seen the defense finish this one off in overtime, but it’s hard to criticize a team that gives up 286 yards and only really made a handful of mistakes.
Just like the Kentucky game, the defense played well enough to win. Unlike the Kentucky game, I think we saw some things that should point towards better days in the not-too-distant future.
Takeaway
Emory Jones is not a bad quarterback.
His statistics actually were pretty solid in this game. He averaged 8.3 yards per attempt and he didn’t turn the ball over. His Yards Above Replacement (YAR) for the game was 0.34, or just above average. His QB rating was 141.3, or right around average.
And his statistics are pretty solid for the season. A QB rating of 153.4 overall with 19 TDs and 10 INTs and a YAR of 1.37. That should be good enough to win a bunch of games. It certainly should be good enough to do better than 5-5 (the Georgia loss isn’t on him).
In my preview, I showed running stats for Florida and Emory Jones. I’ll put those back here again.
The takeaway was that when Florida was efficient running the ball at QB, the team won (and scored points). When Florida was inefficient running the ball at QB, the team lost. Against Missouri, Jones averaged 2.6 yards per rush on 17 carries.
That means that the indecisiveness shown above when running the ball is a killer. If you hit a couple of those big ones and jump in-front, it opens up the passing game and makes Missouri play from behind. Instead, the Tigers were able to stay in the game, create one big play and then win the game in overtime.
I don’t blame Jones for that issue at this point. He’s in his fourth year in the program, but that is something that should have been repped with him from day one. The fact that it isn’t ingrained means that something fell through the cracks with the coaching staff, not just this year, but since he arrived in Gainesville.
So what about that coaching staff, including the head coach?
It’s pretty obvious that Dan Mullen is done. It’s not obvious because he’s lost the team. It’s obvious because he has lost the ability to generate hope within the fan base. Once you lose that, there isn’t anything you can do to get it back.
Scott Stricklin should have learned that watching this season, as Mullen kept Todd Grantham around even though Grantham had lost the fan base and by the time he finally made the move, the fan base had turned on him. Stricklin may have other issues he’s dealing with right now, but the decision-making process with Mullen right now is identical.
Is it fair? It doesn’t really matter. It’s reality.
The reality is that you can’t come into Gainesville talking about the Gator Standard and then only win two SEC games. Ron Zook didn’t do that. Will Muschamp didn’t do that. Jim McElwain didn’t do that. In fact, the last Gators coach to do that was Galen Hall in 1986, and back then they only played six SEC games.
The reality is you can’t talk about relentless effort and then have recruiting classes that rank 4th, 5th, 6th, 5th and currently 9th in the SEC. Now that the SEC season is done for Florida, the Gators are going to average a finish of 5.5 in his four seasons in the SEC. Perhaps it’s not a coincidence that his recruiting ranking over that time is 5th best as well?
And Mullen was correct when he talked about his team being 0-7 in its last seven one-score games during his post-game presser. That record does indicate that the team has been unlucky, but it also emphasizes a point many of us learned during the McElwain era.
One-score games are usually 50-50 propositions. Even if Florida was 2-2 in those games instead of 0-4 this year, 7-4 still isn’t the Gator Standard. Even if they had gone 2-1 in those games instead of 0-3 last year, 10-2 still isn’t the Gator Standard. You just can’t rely on close victories consistently if you want to win big.
If Mullen wants to point towards those losses as a key reason for this team’s struggles, that’s fair. But then we have to point out that he was 6-1 in such games in 2018 and 2019. So if we more evenly distributed his now 6-8 record in close games over his entire Florida tenure, we’d be staring at something McElwainian.
Because that’s really what we’re left with if you look at the past four years in its entirety. In recent Florida coaching lore, the average finish in the SEC for Gator coaches goes, in order, like this: Spurrier (1.5), Meyer (3.7), Zook (4.3), McElwain (5.0), and Muschamp (6.8).
Mullen said that the reason that he let Todd Grantham and John Hevesy go was because he asked himself whether the team was better at that point in the year than they were at the beginning of the year. He didn’t think so and so he made the change.
The Gators have scored 13, 42, 42, 7, 17 and 23 points (24 points per game) in their last six SEC games after scoring 38 and 29 in their first two. One of those 42-pointers was against Vanderbilt and the other was when Mullen got an otherworldly performance out of a QB he steadfastly refuses to play in the second half.
Now consider that Mullen is an offensive coach, that Emory Jones is his hand-picked QB and that the vast majority of the skill players on offense are guys that he has identified and developed. Then ask yourself whether the offense is better now than at the beginning of the year?
Ron Zook got three years. McElwain got three years (with admittedly extenuating circumstances). Muschamp got four.
Are Mario Cristobal, Billy Napier or even (gulp) Lane Kiffin going to do better? You don’t know and neither do I. They could crash and burn. That’s always the risk when you make a coaching change and you have to weigh that with the risk of keeping things the same.
But if the head coach of Missouri trolling your team with a lightsaber after an overtime win at home isn’t crashing and burning, I’m not sure what is.
Change is hard
All the talk of firings this year has come against the backdrop of changes that are going on at my work.
One of my best friends decided to leave the company I work for recently. He did so for reasons that I understand and I’m happy that he has landed at a place that fits his personality and work style better than his previous situation. But it still is hard to swallow.
You build relationships at work with people that start as professional and eventually build into something bordering on friendship. Sometimes that morphs into closer relationships where you invite people into your world a little bit more and they really become your friends.
And sometimes that even morphs into relationships where you invite people into your thought processes and your flaws. I’m not sure everyone has that even in their own families, but I had that every day at work.
I guess I’m writing this section because I hope you all realize that Gators football is much the same way. There are people that we interact with every fall who at first are just acquaintances, sometimes just a handle on Twitter. Then that morphs into closer relationships where they become friends. And if you’re really blessed, some of those relationships turn into something much more like family. I know I have a couple of those developing right now that never would have happened without Florida football.
Treasure that. Because whether the Gators are 5-7 or 13-1, you eventually won’t remember the 2006, 2008 or even the 2021 season for the records or the trophies or the championships as you get older.
You’ll remember the time you spent with your dad, mom, brothers, sisters, sons or daughters. You’ll remember the acquaintances who became friends who became family.
That, my friends, is the real Gator Standard.

My Big Board:
#1 Billy Napier HC-ULL
38-12 as HC at Louisiana after taking over a program that had faltered under Hudspeth and had dealt with recruiting violations; 31-5 over the last 3 seasons. Experience under Dabo at Clemson and at Alabama under Saban. Seems to understand the big picture and places an emphasis on recruiting and building a staff that fits the league and talent available. Had the top rated recruiting class in the SBC for the last 3 years. Young, energetic and not a weirdo. Best all around candidate imo.
Mediocre at best play caller, really would NOT want him calling plays at UF and would hope the admin would push for him to get a real OC to call the plays. May ask for more commitment to the program than the admin is willing to offer to win big. (In a perfect world, my hope would be both sides would agree on these 2 issues to compromise.)
#2 Lane Kiffin HC-Ole Miss
Offensive mastermind, big dick swagger, about to be 14-7 in just under 2 years at Ole Miss, taking over a team that had scholarship reductions. Went 28-15 at USC under major limits from recruiting violations and 26-13 at FAU. 7-6 in one year at Tennessee, coached in the NFL. Single BEST trait about Mullen is his ability to assemble a staff, no doubt in my mind he’d put together a group of killer assistants at a place like UF. Brought in some big time recruits at USC.
Is he the CEO of a major program? How much has me matured? How much does he really want to recruit? Is he cool just winning a lot and being a bad boy that scores a lot of points, or does he want to put in the work and try to win championships? Lots of things that worry me about Kiffin, especially his recruiting. But I feel like he could build a staff that would go hard on the trail, even if he doesn’t. It’s not ideal, but I feel confident we would recruit better than the last 2 coaches did here. Think there’s a good chance of a flameout and some high’s, which isn’t the worst thing in the world. Rivals are scared of him coming here and I feel like it would at least be lots of fun for a few years.
#3 Brent Venables DC-Clemson
Yes, I have a DC at #3. Yes there’s a ton of risk in this one, but there aren’t really any sure things imo after Napier this year and sure thing is a stretch even with him. But Venables has been arguably the best DC in the game for 20 years. A decade learning under Stoops at OU and a decade under Dabo at Clemson, two programs that ran like machines while he was there, so he should know what it takes to build a successful program at a big school. Dominant defenses, should be able to put together a good staff with the guys he’s been around and is a big time recruiter.
Never been a HC, would definitely be a learning/transition period. What kind of hires does he make to run the offense? He’s 50, kinda now or never if he’s gonna become a HC. I’m more inclined to take a risk on a guy like this in this cycle considering the lack of favorable options. Feel like his floor would be Muschamp, don’t know about his ceiling, but I think he’d fix the defense and recruiting problems.
#4 Dave Aranda HC-Baylor
Having a good 2nd year at Baylor after a Covid/rebuilding year, team is 8-2 and winning at K St right now. Has coached really good defenses in a lot of places. SEC experience at LSU, only 45 years old, had a top 4 class in the Big 12 last year, currently sitting at 6th this year.
Lots of question marks with this one as far as staff, recruiting, offense. I have no doubt he can coach defense and he’s done an impressive job at Baylor, but the resume as a HC is still thin and I rate Venables higher as a DC and recruiter, which is why he’s higher on my list despite not having the HC experience.
#5 Jeff Halfley BC-HC
Looks like a pretty good staff builder (outside of OC) and good recruiter, bringing in better classes than BC is used to. Lots of NFL experience, coached in Florida with the Bucs and spent (1 year) time at a big time program with OSU. Seems like a young, burgeoning CEO type, but still not a lot of experience there. Really needs another year or 2 to become an ideal candidate.
Team looked like ***** today against FSU, offensively BC hasn’t looked much different to me from Addazio, except probably worse on the OL. High risk/high reward option imo, could be just a bit too early here but I do feel there is potential for a star in there somewhere. Probably a really tough sell to the UF fanbase at this time with a 12-10 record as HC at BC.
Jim McElwain
Do I look like I fell off the back of a turnip truck last night?
Yes I do.
AND YET, I took my Central Michigan Chippewas and hung 24 points in regulation against this Missouri defense.
If Dan “the offensive mastermind qb whisperer “ scored 24 points in regulation, Florida would’ve won tonight.
It wasn’t the defense that cost them the game tonight because those guys really played their tail off.
It was the offense. Dan Mullen and his hand picked qb (who struggles more than Austin Applby) lost the game tonight.
I need to go prepare for a bowl game now. Maybe Florida will too?
Miss me yet?

SS walked down to the tunnel. He stopped Mullen and laid into him. Basically told him what happened the last two games was unacceptable. Dan said nothing while SS dropped a few F bombs to Dopeys dome. Handed him a piece of paper and said “you say exactly what is on this paper and nothing else”. After that they called Grantham out of the locker room and let him go in tunnel. After him Hevesy. Dan was shook from there on.
There were several seniors that approached Dan thr last two weeks that told him you have to recruit and not rely on the portal. Our seniors told him that. I know one of the seniors and know the guys who saw the tunnel incident.
It is has been done since the loss in Columbia. I’m sure Bobs guy that over heard the tunnel convo is the same guy.

Can’t argue with this. Time for the boosters to ante up, pay Mullen his buyout, and offer Kiffen $10 million a year. A couple of years ago I would have condemned that kind of money, but someone will offer it. As you say, I might not like it, but this is the new reality of college football. I think money is helping ruin the game (TV revenue and rapacious demand for more, I’m looking at you!) but that’s the world of college football we live in. Time to ante up.

I tweeted you a few times about EJ not being able to run the read option. HUGE red flag- never seen a running QB so bad at it…Dan has zero confidence in EJ throwing and play calling showed it. Even the OT td he had Whit throw and EJ almost didn’t turn around for the ball!! Dan is a shell of himself and now as a fan I am broken…In All Kinds of Weather yes but this is yet another low….

The difference in those one score games is largely terrible Special teams play. Let’s look closer at it. This game has an 11 yard punt. LSU PAT blocked. Kentucky blocked kick returned for TD. BAMA had a missed extra point.
The importance of special teams was revealed by Meyer. This especially true in 1 score games. When’s the last time we had a returner who was dangerous. Even Toney only had one returned and that was due to a deception against Kentucky.

Probably a really tough sell to the UF fanbase at this time with a 12-10 record as HC at BC.

“ Are Mario Cristobal, Billy Napier or even (gulp) Lane Kiffin going to do better? You don’t know and neither do I”
Oh I KNOW!
Not so much about Cristobal or Napier, but I KNOW that Lane will have us humming as soon as 2023.
I think he could have us pretty decent next year if he plays AR.

Lane Kiffin Florida Coach 2022
Lane Train 2022 CHOO! CHOO!
Despite what you think of Lane Kiffin, and any preconceived notions you may hold, his success at Ole Miss has been undeniable & come sooner than expected. I, like many others, am choosing to believe that Florida will be in the market for a Head Coach this offseason. Who knows, they may have their guy already? But, while we are navigating the unknown, I will do my best to put together a staff for a guy that absolutely has to be considered for the presumed opening.
Real quick, I want to clear the air on some “concerns” regarding Lane.
First of all, people love working for Lane. It is well documented that Lane creates a work-hard/play-hard atmosphere. It’s why he’s able to assemble such great staffs, despite never being somewhere for more than 3 years as a HC. If you won’t take it from me, take it from CJ Johnson.
Secondly, disgruntled boosters have voiced concerns about Lane’s ability to connect with players. His source, a lowly practice squad OL at FAU, stated that Lane didn’t attempt to build a relationship with players & was extremely distant. I’m sure this player’s opinion was completely unbiased, and has nothing to do with his playing time. In fact, I’ve heard quite the contrary from two current Ole Miss players that I’ve grown up with. Lane obviously serves more of a CEO role, but has absolutely no issues in the player relations department. He is an extremely well liked guy & has the players ready to play for him on any given Saturday – see his 9-2 record & undefeated season at home.
I spoke briefly about the article claiming Lane has neglected MS HS coaches, and am willing to get into that later.. For now, let’s skepticize.
OC/QB – Jeff Lebby
He’ll be considered for Ole Miss job opening, but I think they roll with experience; they have the budget to do so. Tied to the hip with lane otherwise. Working at Florida would give him the platform for his inevitable jump to HC.
RB – Kevin Smith
Brought with Lane from FAU to Ole Miss. Ace recruiter & solid coach. Significant in-state ties. No brainer.
WR – Bryan McClendon
No prior affiliation to Lane, but is Oregon’s designated recruiter in Florida. Been in SEC & knows what it takes. Struggling with Pass Game Coordinator duties at Oregon, they could look to move on. Solid recruiter & WR coach nonetheless.
TE – Clint Trickett
Worked with Lane at FAU & helped develop Mackey Award winner, Harrison Bryant. Young, cheap option who would be hungry for an opportunity like this.
OL – Brent Key
Worked with Lane at Alabama. Great coach & solid on trail, simply made a bad career choice going to Georgia Tech. Used to coaching in tempo offense. Change is inevitable at GT and could be looking to jump ship. Makes less than Hev did.
Co-DC/LB – DJ Durkin
Worked at Florida before. Has worked with Lane the past two years & his defense has seen exponential growth. Young, personable, innovative defensive mind. Issue at Maryland was terrible and will probably face negative recruitment against him as a result, but checks all the other boxes. Almost certain Lane would bring him with.
Co- DC/CB – Travaris Robinson
T Rob is already regretting his decision to coach under Manny. Completely different coaching styles that he knew beforehand, but I’m willing to give my guy another chance. As I said previously, Lane is aware of his personal shortcomings on the trail and builds his staff accordingly. This would be a prime example. T Rob would not be calling plays, but merely have an increased say in game-planning & scheming plus using the title for a higher salary. He is someone that should’ve never left Florida, and a return home is needed.
DL/AHC – Charlie Partridge
Lane’s home-run hire. Partridge was the preceding Head Coach at FAU, so I’m sure him and Lane have had talks. Nonetheless, if you’re coaching in the state of Florida, you know who Charlie is. Undeniable ties at the HS level, impressive track record as a DC coach, and has won battles in FL while working at Pittsburgh. His resume speaks for itself and he’s been waiting to make the jump to UF.
DE – Randall Joyner
Currently coaching the entire DL at Ole Miss, Joyner is a rising name in the coaching industry. Probably my favorite hire Lane has made while at Ole Miss, Joyner has elevated the DL’s play on the field & production on the trail. Young, relatable coach that gets to learn under one of the best in the business while utilizing the Florida logo on the trail.
S – Corey Bell
Bell, a current recruiting staffer at Florida, has connections to several members on this hypothetical staff. He coached at UCF with Coach Lebby, at FAU with Coach Partridge, and is extremely close with T Rob. His most underrated aspect is evaluation. In his first week back at Florida, he went to Dan’s desk with 3 star Isaiah Bond’s tape. Fast forward to today, Bond is one of the most highly regarded WR’s in the country & receiving the full-court press from Alabama. Bell is eager to return to an on-field coaching role & would be a smart, financially practical hire by Lane.

Lane Kiffin Florida Coach 2022
Growl
Watched Kiffen’s post game interview after the Ole Miss / Vandy game. That Kiffen ego talked about how Corral has been the reason for their season. Was self critical about the Vandy score being too close. The Media has created a bad boy Kiffen I haven’t seen all season.
And everyone that recruits Florida is sweating him getting the position in G’ville. He can recruit and he can put together a staff that will recruit. Just like Saban did in Bama once you get the recruiting game working as well as anyone you can probably beat anyone, and your staff makes you or breaks you.
Napier is interesting, can he get a top notch staff.
Lane Train 2022! CHOO! CHOO!
Growl,
I’m all for Lane but I think some old school boosters won’t go for him. Damn shame.
Napier is okay. Might be good. Might not be. Too small a sample size for me to tell. He’ll need a great staff though and his offense looks like a MacElwain offense. Maybe he just needs better players, but his playcalling is pedestrian at best. If Napier is hired he better get a killer OC or he won’t make it 2 seasons.
Still, would be great if people making decisions in hogtown put their egos aside to roll the dice on Lane.

Lane Kiffin 2022
Ben Bennett
The Lane Choo Choo has a big game tonight. Maybe I will get on the choo choo train if they finish 9-2 against the West. Mr. Choo Choo is mostly recruiting 3 stars, what say you??
Lane Train 2022 CHOO! CHOO!
Ben,
You are correct to point out that Lane’s recruiting this year is down. I don’t know what that is about but it is concerning a bit. Let’s see how he finishes out on ESD. He’s had top 5 classes as an HC before so I have belied that he’d be a much better recruiting than Mullen (a low standard indeed).
I think Kiffin could pull in top 10 classes routinely at Florida but with Jimbo, Kirby, Saban and whoever LSU hires, it might be tough for him to ge top 3. Allegedly Napier has potential to do so. I can only hope since it looks like we won’t be able to see lane here next year with the way things are trending.
A shame as tonight he won another rivalry week game at the Egg Bowl and finished 10-2 overall with an sec west schedule (the first time Ole Miss ever had a 10 win regular season schedule, freeze won 10 games only when including the bowl game). If Ole Miss wins the bowl game, it’ll be their first 11 win season ever. To put in perspective, Mullen’s best season at Florida from a win-loss perspective was 2019 when he finished 11-2 with a NY6 bowl. If Lane wins the bowl game, he’ll match Mullen’s best season at Florida (with an SEC East schedule to boot). Plus Ole Miss opened the season in ATL vs Louisville and beat a very good Liberty team coached by Hugh freeze. Remarkable to think what he’s done in 2 years at ole miss, a team that had been on probation during the freeze years and had gone 6-6, 5-7, and finally 4-8 (tending in the wrong direction each year). So lane took over a 4-8 team that had .500 or less records for 4 years (they finished 5-7 in high freeze’s last year) and now is making history. A true turnaround!
But yes, the recruiting is a bit spotty this year, I am worried a bit about that, but I also believe he’ll be able to recruit better at Florida (based on his past recruiting classes as coach of usc and Tennessee) as well as his willingness to recruit arch manning and use social media to connect with recruits.
Billy Napier has only recruited 3 stars as a head coach, all his top recruits were at Clemson (where he got fired for his MacElwain style offense) and as a War coach at Alabama. At his current stop he’s never signed a 4 star player, only 3 stars. So supposedly he’s a good recruiter because he out recruits others in the sunbelt and has had the #1 ranked recruiting class in the sunbelt. But it’s also worth noting that Lane had the #3 and # 1 ranked classes in C-USA when he was coach at FAU. It’s easy for a coach with a few high profile jobs to recruit well in those smaller conferences, but like Lane, in the SeC it’s a different story. We’ll see if Napier’s recruiting acumen lives up to the hype because of not, not only he, but one Scott Stricklin will be looking for a new job. Maybe they’ll reunite at Mississippi State with Dan Mullen as Napier’s OC!
Anyway, Lane Kiffin won, the Lane Train making history at Ole Miss at 10-2, and Scott Stricklin should get over his prejudice and pick up the phone and call him (apparently he’s interested in the Florida job) instead of investing heavy on a suspect Sunbelt special who looks a lot more like Macelwain than Saban.

Lane Kiffin for Florida Coach 2022!
Jeffrey Rizzo
I posted this on this site a few days ago, before Will showed the video of Emory not reading the play correctly on the read option, a recurring issue all year. It is even more prescient today….
“The depressing part about this article was that we knew Emory had trouble reading defenses in the passing game, but I don’t think anyone expected him to be as bad as he is in the read-option game. And it has been that way since the beginning of the year. The passing game was only going to be made simple for him if we got the running game going. And that was only going to happen if he was very good in the read-option game and made the running game extremely prolific. He has been bad in reading things in the running game and the passing game. Not sure why after four years in the system he can’t read the defensive end crashing and whether to give it or to pull it. He’s mediocre in the read-option running game and he’s mediocre in the passing game, and I think that’s why you see so many speed options and quarterback power runs because Mullen doesn’t trust him to make the right reads in the read-option running game. I didn’t expect him to be Kyle Trask in the passing game, but I expected him to execute read-option reads with a lot more proficiency and a lot better decision making.”
We really fired Jim McElwain for this?
Dan Mullen is the “qb whisperer”
I guess anyone can look like a good qb developer when you have 2 decade long NFL qb Alex Smith, Heisman winner Tim Tebow, and current Franchise qb of the Dallas Cowboys (America’s Team) Dak Prescott under center.
Dan is Gene Chizik minus the titles.
FREEZE PLEEZE!
Whoever it is must:
1- be able to recruit 5 * players and consistently be able to be top 7-8 in recruiting. Thus, what’s his track record as a recruiter? Maybe have taken a team that’s a historical 40-70 up to 15-20.
2- put up points. Does not have to be a play caller, but oversees an offense that is not adverse to points. Must have done so with not one great QB (see Matt Corral) but with either 2 or has done so with very average QBs.
3- no eyes on NFL. Either been there done that or has shown no inclination (no heated pursuit).
4- innovative. Teams have adapted. Maybe run heavy one year, then pass heavy the next due to talent.
5- some head coaching experience. See Nochamp, Zook, Diaz, et al.
6-nose. Does not pick his nose on tv while on sideline during games. This was Graham McKeel’s (rip) statement at the mega booster meeting pre hiring of Steve Spurrier.
7-not a drunk, gambler, serial coed fucker, or drug user.
Are there any candidates out there who fit the bill?
Yes there is!

MEL TUCKER TRAIN 2022! CHOO! CHOO!
Dan has lost “it”. Getting blown out by Georgia is embarrassing, but Georgia is the #1 team for a reason: Kirby’s recruiting. Florida needs a powerhouse recruiter, remember Urban? Florida needs someone who can turn things around fast, remember Urban? But Urban ain’t coming back. Is there another powerhouse recruiter who can turn things around fast? YES!!!!! Mel Tucker learned directly under Kirby how to build a championship program. Mel Tucker turned Colorado around in 1 year, and has Michigan State (which was a dumpster fire when D’Antoni left) 8-0, with a victory over a top 10, 7-0 rival. Mel Tucker has answers. Jim McElwain recruited and signed Trask, Toney, pitts and had Matt corral and jamar chase before he got fired.
Scored more points vs Mizzou this year than Florida too.

Billy Napier is LSU’s 6th or 7h choice and he’s our first?
We’re dipping into the Sun Belt to replace Dan Mullen? Are we going to pay him $8 million too?
LSU and Georgia will own us for the next decade like Spurrier owned them.

Who would you choose??

Yup, I lasted longer at cmu than Dan did at Florida. Same can be said about frost and Kelly.
Guess thats why Dan was the 3rd choice!
